During February 2021, Bristol Link with Beira (BLB) – Bristol Link with Beira – Promoting lasting peace and development (bristolbeiralink.org) – lost a friend and ally with the sudden and unexpected death at the age of 57 of Daviz Simango, Mayor of Beira, Bristol’s twin city.

Daviz became Mayor of Beira in 2003 and had been re-elected by the citizens of Beira three times. He was a civil engineer and project managed some of the city’s key infrastructure developments in particular relating to its flood defence strategy. He also twice ran for president of his country having set up the Movement for a Democratic Mozambique party.

He was a great supporter of the link between Bristol and Beira believing that we could learn from each other and bring mutual benefits to the people and communities of both cities. He visited Bristol a number of times and hosted delegations in Beira as part of that commitment.

In 2018, Mayor Simango received the Dr Benjamin Barber Global Cities Award to commemorate his outstanding commitment to urban governance and contribution to advancing the values and principles of democracy. He always valued the contribution of young leaders and dedicated the award to them.
